$\rm\colorbox{white}{About Art Pocket (Art Mutual Aid)}$

Art Pocket is a free art-share community and a disruptive response to the growing needs of San Jose and the South Bay Area. We believe that anyone can be an artist! Creativity should not be reserved only for those who can afford materials. By redistributing art supplies and hosting free community events, we make art more accessible, sustainable, and equitable.

$\rm\colorbox{pink}{What is art mutual aid?}$

Art Mutual Aid is a community-driven approach to collectively sharing resources, skills, and support to meet artist’s needs, especially in times of systemic failure. Unlike charity, which often involves top-down assistance, mutual aid is rooted in solidarity, reciprocity, and collective responsibility. It emphasizes horizontal relationships, where everyone contributes and benefits equally.

Art mutual aid fosters create freedom, reduces art waste, and builds more resilient communities

$\rm\colorbox{#fe75b0}{Are you a non-profit?}$

No! Art Pocket is not a non-profit and we have zero plans of becoming one. Mutual aid requires a horizontal exchange, and that becomes much more complicated with a Board involved. We don’t want to deal with that or any of the paperwork that comes with registering as a non-profit.

As a mutual aid group, we are responsive and flexible to changes. Plus, nonprofit structures sometimes come with mission creep (pressure to expand programs in ways that look good for funding or compliance, rather than what’s actually needed on the ground). We want to stay hyper-local to our San Jose artist community.

$\rm\colorbox{#FFE6E6}{Why the name Art Pocket?}$

We wanted a name that reflects the small, accessible art supply libraries we dream to create around San Jose — kind of like Little Free Libraries, but for creativity. “Art Pocket” evokes that idea of a small, art supply space at our host locations where anyone can stop by, grab something to create with (or leave something for others), and go.

$\rm\colorbox{pink}{The values of Art Pocket}$

Art Pocket is all about radical community creativity. We’re:

Anti-capitalist — creativity shouldn’t depend on money; we share resources so everyone speak up and create change.

Community-first — supporting local artists and connecting people is our main goal.

Radical — we rethink what access to art can look like in San Jose.

Simply put: art is for everyone, and everyone belongs here. ✨

$\rm\colorbox{#FFE6E6}{Do we accept collaborations?}$

Always! Collabs are our bread and butter! 💛 We’re all about working with other creative groups and community spaces to make Art Pocket possible. Partnerships let us reach more people, share resources, and create events that bring the community together. If you’ve got an idea, we’d love to hear it!

$\rm\colorbox{#fe75b0}{How do you get donations?}$

We collect supplies through multiple channels:

We welcome nearly all types of new or gently used art supplies, including:

$\rm\colorbox{#FFE6E6}{What happens to donations we cannot redistribute?}$

We do our best to make use of everything, but sometimes donations aren’t actually usable as art supplies. When that happens, we responsibly recycle or dispose of them so our spaces stay organized and ready for creativity.
